The Microflora Community Tea Party

A two-part workshop collaborative presented by Natalia Nakazawa and Piero Passacantando. The GrowNYC team is teaming up with KODA lab to put on a fermentation and cyanotype workshop using plants from GrowNYC’s Teaching Garden.

This two-part workshop explores the porous threshold between body, architecture, and ecology through fermentation, rituals, urban foraging, and tactile play – mapping a living blueprint for more entangled ways of being in the world. Our own bodies are communities, constantly in the process of exchange with the environment. We are not singular things. Our bodies are much more intertwined with the environment than meets the eye – with each other and our plant, animal, and mineral allies. Germs and bacteria are constantly migrating between the outside and the inside.

Part 1: WE ARE THE OUTSIDE! THE OUTSIDE IS INSIDE!

Introduction to fermentation, what it is, the types of fermentation and conceptual implications (we aren’t simply mono individuals, we are a collective, a symbiotic society, we are porous and entangled, interbeing). We will spend the day gathering materials to make ferments and jarring our experiments.

Part 2: ART MAKING WITH FERMENTATION!

We will be using a combination of natural dyes and pigments (some fermented) along with cyanotype and other contemporary techniques. We will create a collective artwork reflecting the idea of connection and interbeing even in the face of divisive forces. Reciprocal painting – including portraits – and plants will be overlaid on a large paper.
