Mission & Vision We Are GrowNYC
Our mission is to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food, neighborhood green spaces, waste reduction opportunities, and care for the environment.
We envision a New York City where fresh, nutritious food is ensured as a basic human right. Where our foodshed is protected and local farmers prosper. Where all have access to places to gather and grow. Where we handle our waste responsibly. And where all New Yorkers, especially those within frontline communities*, are empowered to enact their vision of a thriving community.
*Frontline identities/communities is a term used to describe communities of color, Indigenous peoples, immigrants and refugees, and people with lower incomes who are impacted first and worst by environmental hazards and climate change.
Our History & Victories Founded in 1970 and evolving ever since
GrowNYC was born from the ideals of the first Earth Day in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City, originally as a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues.
Today, GrowNYC is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit serving New Yorkers across the five borough with environmental and food access programs that promote fresh produce from farmers, community gardens, and education to foster collective action for environmental, climate, and food justice.
