The Farmstand Business curriculum empowers school communities to take a meaningful look at our food system, to evaluate the growing capacity at their individual schools, and examine the model GrowNYC has used for over 50 years to support food access in New York City. It allows your school to reach beyond the perimeter of your school garden and onto plates in your communities, while allowing your students to learn real-world business skills.
Included resources:
– Full 12-lesson standards-aligned curriculum
– Accompanying powerpoints for each lesson
– Facilitator’s guide
– Lesson planning calendar (5-6 months to implement the entire program)
Curriculm Objectives include gaining understanding of the Farmstand Business Curriculum, including:
– Unit 1: Getting to Know the Local Food System – exploring foundational concepts related to food, farming, and community development that set the stage for creating your farmstand business.
– Unit 2: Introduction to Business – the goal is to develop a food access business through which students can authentically participate in our local food system. This curriculum will ask students to begin envisioning the business they wish to create, with critical thinking and action-oriented processes. The activities in this curriculum culminate in a food access business project and should be taken seriously as a part of real efforts to build a food access business as a group in your school community.
– School Farmstand Manual – This manual will give an idea of what to consider, how to prepare, how to launch, and how to sustain your food access point!
The curriculum is designed to be taught as individual units or as a whole. Check out the Facilitator’s Guide and School Farmstand Manual for more detailed instructions on how to use the curriculum and create a Farmstand.
