In his booklet called The Rebirth of Farmers Markets in New York City self0 published in 1978 by co-founder Barry Benepe, he described that first day: Farmers accustomed to small crowds at roadside stands were amazed and pleased to be surrounded by throngs of customers for hours on end, while the market customers were equally astonished to find farmers from the country selling a variety of fresh-picked seasonal produce right in the city.
In the five decades since, Greenmarket has transformed the way New Yorkers eat. The markets have been instrumental in the farm-to-table movement, providing inspiration to countless chefs to explore the bounty in their own backyards. They’ve transformed neighborhoods, served as crucial food access points, and helped preserve thousands of acres in agricultural land across the region. What’s more, Greenmarkets serve as a beloved third space; a place you go to meet a neighbor and be with your community.
