GrowNYC Greenmarket is a network of nearly 200 farms and food businesses located within 250 miles of New York City. This spring, unseasonably warm temperatures caused fruit trees to bloom early across the Northeast. Then, on April 20th, temperatures plummeted to well below freezing for two consecutive days, damaging budding fruit.
While some orchards suffered near-total crop failures for fruits like cherries, apricots, plums, peaches, pears, and apples, neighboring farms were completely spared.
Greenmarkets are currently plentiful and abundant with early summer fruit and vegetables, but you may notice that some farms don’t have produce items you’ve come to expect and enjoy.
We are committed to ensuring these seasonal favorites remain available at our markets. To support our farmers whose crops were negatively impacted, certain producers are utilizing the “Request to Purchase” program to source fruit from regional farms who were less affected by the weather. All sourced items will have clear signage at our markets identifying the origin of these items.
We appreciate your continued patronage and look forward to seeing you at the markets this season as we work together to support our regional growers.
With gratitude,
Greenmarket Team
