All FAQs

  • If you believe you lost personal property at a GrowNYC Greenmarket location, please complete and submit this Google Form to report the missing item. Our staff will contact you if the item is recovered to arrange for you to pick up the item. If you do not receive a response after two weeks, you can assume the item has not been found. The length of time that GrowNYC holds found items varies. Keys, phones/other electronic devices (tablets, cameras, etc.), wallets/bags/purses containing cash, IDs without an address, EBT/OTC cards, prescription eyewear, sunglasses, and jewelry/watches are discarded after one month. IDs with an address will be mailed to the address after two weeks. All other items are kept for a period of two weeks before being discarded.

  • Greenmarket farmers and bakers donate nearly 1 million pounds of food to New York City food pantries and neighborhood soup kitchens annually.

  • Ask the farmer. Many crops were harvested less than 24 hours before market. Some foods keep longer, such as onions, apples, potatoes and cheese. Because Greenmarket farmers grow these foods themselves and bring them from their local farms that morning, their products travel a very short time and distance from the farm to you. All Greenmarket participants are required to follow safety standards prescribed by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Farms, facilities, and markets are inspected to ensure compliance.

  • Some do. All are personally invested in the health of the water, soil, and air on the farms where they live and raise their families. Ask the farmer about their methods. Many customers seek out farmers markets for just that reason to meet the farmer and ask how they raised each crop.

  • By law, fluid milk must be pasteurized in order for it to be sold at farmers markets in New York State. Farmers may sell aged cheeses made from raw/unpasteurized milk, provided it is aged at least 60 days. New York State does license some dairy farms to sell raw/unpasteurized milk from their farms, but customers must travel to the farm to make the purchase.

  • Greenmarket farmers raise their crops on farmland in upstate New York and in neighboring states. Greenmarket farmer’s tables reflect our growing season: asparagus and rhubarb in spring, peaches and corn in summer, pumpkins and pears in fall. Dairy, meats, honey, wool and more are available year-round. Explore what’s in season with our harvest calendar. You will not find tropical crops like citrus and coffee; these don’t grow in this region, so cannot be sold.
