For many years, GrowNYC’s Farmstand program has been a cornerstone of our work to expand access to fresh, locally grown food across New York City. We are deeply grateful for the partnership of elected leaders, community partners, and businesses that have helped bring regional produce into NYC neighborhoods. We also sincerely thank you, our valued customers, for supporting your neighborhood Farmstand.
A Strategic Shift in Food Access Distribution Models
To better address the rising tide of food insecurity and evolving community needs, GrowNYC is transitioning from the Farmstand retail model to an expanded free-food distribution initiative: Food For Families. The Farmstand program concluded on June 30, 2026, as we shifted resources to our Food For Families project.
By transitioning to our Food for Families distribution model, we can streamline our operations and direct our resources more effectively toward free food access, ensuring we can continue our mission in the face of deepening economic challenges for the communities that we serve.
This evolution allows GrowNYC to respond more effectively to the economic pressures and uncertainty surrounding federal nutrition benefits that many New Yorkers face today. By focusing on free distribution, we can achieve several critical goals:
- No Cost Access: Providing fresh produce at no cost to residents experiencing high levels of food insecurity.
- Expanded Reach: Serving a greater number of households across the five boroughs.
- Farmer Support: Maintaining consistent, fair-market purchasing directly from regional farmers to ensure they remain supported and compensated.
Moving Forward Together
Customers who previously used SNAP, Health Bucks, WIC/Senior FMNP, and other nutrition incentives at Farmstand locations will continue to have access to these benefits at nearby GrowNYC Greenmarkets where they can continue to purchase fresh food directly from regional farmers. GrowNYC is committed to ensuring that every neighborhood previously served by a Farmstand maintains access to fresh food. We continue to coordinate with elected offices and community stakeholders to identify local community-based organizations that can serve as partner sites for these new free food distribution efforts.
